A showdown for the south…

Dan Herrick hasn’t ridden through Arizona in nearly six years. A Texan man himself, he’s been wayfaring north.

But then a letter came from ‘Major’ Cal McDade, the owner of the Walking C Ranch and Herrick’s father-in-law.

Or he was to be his father-in-law, if Elizabeth, the love of his life hadn’t died from Typhoid those six years previous.

At the time, McDade had cursed his name but now he’s asking for a favour – in the form of a gun.

Before he even gets there, Herrick has an idea of why.

McDade, after all, is an old-school free-range beef rancher and a former Confederate Major.

But the once wild west is dying and its borders are being tamed. The government has passed the Homesteader Act and once free land is now being fenced off.

McDade’s type won’t hear of it – especially from Washington ‘yankies’. His land is his and he’ll see no homesteader take it from him.

On his way to the local town of Centro, Herrick witnesses a man being bushwhacked by two strangers.

His only clues to go on are a strange impression of a longhorn in the dust and some broken matches.

Unsure if the law has got to Centro, he hides the body; his fears are founded, as the town is even more dilapidated then it was six years ago.

Most of the good folk have already left northwards, and it seems that McDade has made the mistake of hiring some suspicious gunslingers.

Herrick takes an instant disliking to one – a longhaired gunnie, with a smooth Mid-Eastern accent and a navy Colt at his side.

The violence has got to end and Herrick knows that he’s the man to wrangle the last remnants of both the Wild West and the confederate south in one big Sixgun Showdown…

While it took me just a little bit to get into the story, once I did so, it really took off. A likeable protagonist, auxiliary characters who are fairly well fleshed and a light sprinkling of romance. Anyone who likes a good frontier tale, cleanly told, will probably enjoy Sixgun Showdown. The only problem I had with the book was the frequent and improper usage of, commas. But that wasn't enough to prevent me from thoroughly enjoying the story.

In Arizona Territory, Dan Herrick finds a man shot in the back. Tracks around the body show there were two men involved. Dan finds the two men lay in wait & bush whacked the unsuspecting man. There is an imprint in the dirt of a belt buckle & also three matches broken in half along with three cigarette butts. After covering the body with rocks to preserve it for later identification Dan rides into the town of Centro. A letter from Cal McDade has brought Dan back to Arizona. He was a top wrangler on the McDade Walking C ranch & had things worked out, McDade would have been his father-in-law. But Elizabeth came down with typhoid & was dead in a short time. McDade never approved of the marriage & after her death there was no reason for Dan to stay. Now arriving back Dan is shocked to see how deralick the town has become & wonders why Cal McDade has sent for him. Dan will soon uncover a nest of rattlers & finds himself in league with some "oldsters" that will help put things to rights.
Very good read that I would recommend for those looking for a cleanly written western & a good day's entertainment.
Thank you for a really enjoyable read. It has a lot of action and a nice ending. I really enjoyed the book.
Excellent story well told. You have to love the good "guys" and their fight against the bad ones.
This is a good read. This story of the old west is full of action and is an example of what readers want from a good story.
This book had a realistic plot with unexpected twist much like a Louis L'Amour novel, really enjoyed it, think you will also.
